Alonso 'just too slow' at Monaco GP

Fernando Alonso was one of the disappointments of this Monaco Grand Prix. Starting from sixth position on the grid, the Asturian ultimately had to settle for seventh place after spending the race defending his place. The double world champion nevertheless gave way to Sergio Pérez and Adrian Sutil, his F138 curiously lacking in performance on the Monegasque track. “The main problem was speed, we didn’t have it. We normally have a good pace on Sunday, but that wasn't the case. We also had other problems. The team told me that a plastic bag was under my front wing for ten laps, which took away performance. A part of Pérez's front wing also ended up under my flat bottom, which caused me to lose 30 to 40 performance points. But during the first 30 laps, before the red flag, we didn't have any big problems. We were just too slow. »

The pilot of the Team quickly sought to ensure a result when noticing this lack of performance on its F138. The Asturian has only half achieved his objective since he is eight points behind Kimi Räikkönen but is 29 points behind the Championship leader. Sebastian Vettel. “There is a risk when fighting for the Championship against drivers who have two or three points. I did the same thing in 2008 and 2009 when I had nothing to lose. I tried to overtake in unexpected places and sometimes it worked. And you don't lose anything if you break your front wing. But I'm fighting for the title and I was looking in my mirrors to see if anyone was trying to overtake me. Why do we end up where we are? Because we lacked speed in qualifying and in the race. We fight with the best by starting at the front and we fight with the drivers who have nothing to lose by starting from seventh or eighth position. »
