Alonso: the road to the title is still long

Fernando Alonso continues to fight to collect a few meager points with McLaren who is still struggling to find the front with his Power Unit Honda. The double world champion, who has retired from the European Grand Prix held on June 19 in Baku (Azerbaijan), remains realistic about the chances of the Woking team this season.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the Asturian believes that fourth place in the Manufacturers' Championship is a difficult goal to achieve. McLaren, seventh in the standings, is 66 points behind Williams Racing.

“It’s too optimistic, especially with some circuits that should be good for Williams and Force India, recognized the Spaniard. We must be more or less satisfied and proud of the progress made by the team over the last 12 months, but we must also keep our feet on the ground. We know that the title will take a long time, there is still a long way to go. I remain positive and optimistic for next year because the direction is clearly good, but we need to pick up the pace. »

Fernando Alonso is concerned about the progress made by the competition, particularly that of Mercedes which continues to dominate the F1. The new regulations could be a positive point for the British team provided that it does not relax its efforts.

“We are still missing horses against the opponents, added the former pilot of the Team Ferrari. We need to see progress because the gap is quite large. We need to reduce it in the remaining events this season. We need to get engine upgrades, some development tokens could be used to get a little closer to the Mercedes who have the best Power Unit. »
