Alonso: first corner will determine strategy

Fernando Alonso will start from ninth position on the grid for the Singapore Grand Prix. If the pilot McLaren was able to compete in Q3 and beat his teammate Jenson Button in 12th (following Sergio Pérez's penalty), the Woking team was hoping for a better result given the performance of the MP4-31 in testing.

“We didn’t really have any pace in qualifying, analyzed Fernando Alonso. We can still do something in the race with a good strategy, but it won't be easy if we don't have more performance... There should be a lot of action, especially in the first ten laps. We will have to be flexible to react immediately to each situation. »

“We know that the track is difficult and that the safety car is often out. The first turn will determine a lot depending on our position, said Fernando Alonso. It will also have a big impact on strategy. Engineers will work tirelessly to develop all kinds of scenarios. »

McLaren will still have difficulty fighting against Toro Rosso who performed well with Carlos Sainz Jr in sixth position ahead of his teammate Daniil Kvyat.

“It will probably be difficult to beat them, recognized the double world champion. They've clearly had a better weekend so far, but the race still has to happen and anything can happen, especially here.", said Fernando Alonso.

McLaren is only three points ahead of Toro Rosso in the Constructors' Championship.
