Alonso: McLaren will target Mercedes in 2017

McLaren still seeking to reconnect with the front-runners since the return of Honda as an engine manufacturer. Despite the lack of results, Fernando Alonso hopes that the Woking team will take advantage of the new regulations to close the gap on the top teams.

“I'm very optimistic about next year's engine, confided the McLaren driver in the paddock of the Singapore Grand Prix. I think we can rise to the level of Mercedes and I am sure that Renault et Ferrari will also do a good job of making things more interesting. I expect big progress. Everyone is looking to reach Mercedes but perhaps that is an optimistic goal. »

Fernando Alonso hopes the 2017 season will allow him to challenge for victory again, his last success dating back to the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix.

“It would indeed be wonderful to achieve a first victory with this project,” admitted the double world champion. I don't know if I'll get the chance, or if it will be for Stoffel (Vandoone, who will replace Jenson Button next year), but this day will be wonderful for everyone involved from day one,” assured the Asturian.

McLaren is chasing the first step of the podium since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix where Jenson Button won.
