Alonso eyes Malaysian GP victory

Fernando Alonso had not qualified so well since his last pole at the German Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver managed to take third place on the starting grid at Sepang, where he took victory last year by taking advantage of the arrival of rain during the last qualifying session. There Team was at ease in the wet conditions since Felipe Massa even placed himself on the front row, ahead of the Asturian for the second time in a row.

“I’m very happy with this position because it’s been a long time since I qualified in the top three.”, underlined the double world champion. “Maybe the rain helped a little because we weren’t the fastest in the dry. In any case, with this position we have a good chance of finishing on the podium and we can even dream of a victory. We hesitated in Q3 because the track dried quickly and the intermediates collapsed after one or two laps in the dry, but this choice worked. »

The Scuderia driver is aware that the result of the Malaysian Grand Prix will depend on the teams' ability to adapt to the changing conditions at Sepang. If the Asturian is not concentrating on the start of the race, he still hopes to get off to a good start when the lights go out to take the advantage. “We’ll have to see how it goes tomorrow because it’s always a lottery if it rains.”, recognizes the 2012 vice-champion who won last year on this track in the rain, resisting the comeback of Sergio Pérez. “Even if the departure is not the most important in F1, we will try to achieve a good one to maintain our position and even try to pass Hag at the first turn. Our race pace shown in Australia and on the long runs here makes us optimistic. »
