Alonso: “Without problems, points are guaranteed”

Fernando Alonso expressed optimism about the potential of McLaren while the Woking team must complete the last two Grands Prix of the season. The Asturian hopes that the renewed form displayed at the Mexican GP at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez comes from the chassis.

“We have to wait and see what the weather has in store for us and our level on this circuit, said Fernando Alonso in the paddock of the Brazilian GP at Interlagos. We clearly have a chance of achieving a good result. Some of our opponents will perhaps have penalties and we could manage to finish in the points. We lost several top tens in the last few races due to lack of reliability. Without problems, I think the points will be guaranteed. »

“Mexico City was, in my opinion, one of our best races. We were unable to bring any new elements because this race took place directly after Austin (Texas) and this is perhaps due to the characteristics of the track. The developments have generally been positive and have helped reduce our delay. Our weaknesses have been identified and we should be able to work on them by 2018”, added the double world champion.

Fernando Alonso remains uncompromising when drawing an initial assessment of the 2017 season where McLaren is languishing in ninth place in the Championship.

“The season was pretty bad. Despite the progress made and the optimism for the next season, we cannot say that it was a good year. We had high hopes after the winter break and found ourselves having used about a dozen engines”, summarized the Spaniard.

Fernando Alonso took the opportunity to also give his opinion on the FIA's first proposals concerning the engine regulations for the 2021 season.

“I didn't read the entire FIA report, I only looked at the reports which indicated that not all participants were happy with it. I'm sure they will find a solution. We still have plenty of time. It will be a good thing for the discipline. It will probably be impossible to go back to the old engines because the world has changed”, said Fernando Alonso.
