Fernando Alonso believes Max Verstappen would not have been given a penalty after impeding George Russell in qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix if it had been another driver... with a different nationality.

Fernando Alonso expressed his doubts regarding the Max Verstappen loses pole at Grand Prix Qatar after the penalty imposed on the Dutchman who had hindered George Russell in qualifying. A penalty of one place on the grid that the Spanish driver suspects is linked to the driver's nationality Mercedes.

This is not the first time that Alonso has made such statements. During the Miami Grand Prix, the pilot Aston Martin had advanced that Lewis Hamilton had not been penalized for the collision at the start of the race" because he is not Spanish " while the septuple of the world " ruined the race of several drivers »

Nationality problem?

« Sometimes when they apply a rule or penalty to someone, why not follow this route? » asks the double champion of the world on the logic of the decisions of the race stewards. He adds that " in the next race the rule no longer applies, depending on your nationality. »

Alonso believes the stewards are more likely to side with a British driver than others. He cites the example of his 20-second drive-through penalty in Australia, when the stewards deemed he had slowed too much before Turn 6, which upset George Russell who then crashed.

« If I do [the same thing as Russell, on the incident with Verstappen], I probably won't get the benefits he got." The Iberian believes that the Briton might not have received a penalty if the roles had been reversed in Melbourne. " Sometimes you wonder if you changed your position and were the other person, would you get the same treatment? That's what I sometimes say to myself. »

Almost all of F1 swears by England because the conditions for working there are more favourable, and this medal perhaps has a downside. But instead of conceiving this Anglophobia, perhaps it was necessary to think about it before.
