The end of the 2017 season should mark the end of the contract Fernando Alonso with McLaren. And the double Spanish world champion is still eagerly awaited for any information on his future in motorsport.
After competing in the Indianapolis 500 last May with the McLaren – Honda – Andretti alliance, a stint in IndyCar, like some of his predecessors (Emerson Fittipaldi, Nigel Mansell, etc.) emerged among the many rumors about the Woking pilot, foot calls from the american series being very insistent lately.
But Alonso reminds that the F1 keeps his preference. « My first priority is F1 and winning a third world championship, but I also want to try for the triple crown, comments Alonso on CNN. An IndyCar finish may occur. I would like to come back there (to Indianapolis) but maybe not in the very near future. »
Possible decision at end of year
Weaned from victories since Spain 2013 with Ferrari, and last titled in 2006 with Renault, Alonso took up the McLaren-Honda challenge in 2015, the return of the Japanese engine manufacturer with the British structure raising many hopes.
The prospect of evolving within a team allowing him to return to success remains the essential condition for remaining in F1 for the Iberian driver, who could make his decision at the very end of the season.
« If I don't see a clear plan that will allow me to fight for victory, I will look outside of F1. But I could decide around November-December. I will try all possibilities before then. »
