Alonso wanted a new project

For five seasons, between 2010 and 2014, Fernando Alonso tried everything to secure this third world title which has eluded him since 2006, all under the colors of the Team Ferrari. In an interview with CNN, the Spanish driver indicated that he had probably been slow to leave the Italian team.

" Probably yes, admits the now spearhead of McLaren-Honda alongside Jenson Button. The car was not competitive and things were getting sadder and sadder. So probably one or two years less would have been the best thing, but we tried to do our best…”

For the old pilot Renault, the new challenge proposed by the return of the association between McLaren and the engine manufacturer Honda, a legendary duo of the 80s and 90s, was the right choice. “Last year, I realized that with the domination of Mercedes, it was not possible for Ferrari to win in the short term, and that a new project was the best idea. McLaren was a risky project because everything is new, but we are a team: we win and lose together. »

The Iberian should benefit from major improvements on his MP4-30 for this weekend in Belgium, particularly in terms of the Power Unit, Honda having planned to use some of its development tokens.
