Jack Doohan will be behind the wheel of theAlpine A524 on Friday, during Free Practice 1 of the Canadian Grand Prix. The Australian will take part in his first official session in Formula 1 this year, he who has already participated in four Free Practice sessions in 2022 and 2023 with the A arrow.

The young 21-year-old pilot, member of the academy Alpine and candidate for tenure in 2025 within the French team, will ride aboard the car byEsteban Ocon during EL1. The Frenchman will then find his mount for the rest of the weekend, and will respect his penalty of five places on the starting grid following his collision with Pierre Gasly at Monaco.

Jack Doohan's participation in Free Practice 1 in Montreal is not a surprise: the Australian, 3rd in the championship Formula 2 last year, has been helping the French team since the start of the season via the simulator enstone. Alpine will therefore use its young driver to correlate the data on the track with that of the simulator.

Not a punishment for Ocon

Contrary to appearances, the absence of Esteban Ocon during Free Practice 1 is not a punishment inflicted by the team led by Bruno Famin: on the contrary, it would be the Ocon clan who asked to "sacrifice" this session. tests since with his penalty of five places on the grid in Canada, the Frenchman already seems condemned to start at the back of the pack. At the same time, Alpine also fulfills one of its two obligations to run a rookie in one of its cars during Free Practice throughout the season. The French team, in the hope of having a more competitive car at the end of the season, is therefore getting rid of one of this first obligation early in the season.

“I’m very excited about hitting the track in Montreal for FP1, rejoices Jack Doohan. It will be the first time that I will drive on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit, which I am looking forward to. I am grateful to the team for giving me the opportunity to spend more time on the track and familiarize myself with the 2024 cars from the start of the season. This will also help me with the work I do in the simulator, especially during the European events. I will strive to do my best for the team and maximize the session for both drivers, looking at some test elements and understanding the new track surface. »

Esteban Ocon, who announced on Monday that his adventure with Alpine would end at the end of the 2024 season, wants to turn the page on recent events and focus fully on the rest of the season. “A lot has been said over the last few days, and I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel and get back on the track. I am fully dedicated to the team and optimizing our results on track, starting this weekend in Canada. »

As he is going to serve a 5 place penalty, he might as well have Jack DOOHAN ride in EL1 and show himself to be a "team player" on this occasion!
