Andrea Kimi Antonelli penalized on the grid at Silverstone

The Grand Prix races are coming thick and fast, and they're all different for Andrea Kimi Antonelli. After a first podium finish in Canada two weeks earlier, the Italian didn't see the end of the first lap in Austria. The 18-year-old only has himself to blame, as he completely missed his braking point at turn three.

By wanting to propel his Mercedes on the rope to gain several positions, the native of Bologna arrived with too much speed. He was unable to stop his car in time, harpooning that of Max Verstappen (Red Bull), causing the two cars to abandon.

In addition to losing valuable points, Antonelli has also been penalized for the next Grand Prix, the British Grand Prix. At Silverstone, the Mercedes driver will have to drop back three places on the grid.

Antonelli apologized to Verstappen

« I think I had a normal start, then going up to Turn 3 I was just trying to maintain my position., said Andrea Kimi Antonelli after the race. I didn't want to do anything because I knew there was no room in front, but when I braked, I locked the rear and got trapped. »

« When I locked the rear, I lost control of the car. I had to avoid [Lawson's] Racing Bulls at first, but I couldn't stop. Unfortunately, I hit Max and I'm really sorry for the team, and for him of course. »

« I apologized immediately. I know it was entirely my fault, and I'm sorry I ended my race, but also his. »

No time to procrastinate for the teenager despite this third retirement in five races, since the next meeting arrives next weekend in Great Britain.
