Russia's invasion of Ukraine forced the FIA to take drastic decisions against Russian drivers and teams. If it decided not to exclude them from its competitions, the governing body imposed the condition on them to ride in a neutral capacity and under its flag.
Several drivers were then affected by this decision of the FIA like Nikita mazepin or even Daniil Kvyat who ended their 2022 sports program. Others have decided to find solutions to be able to continue running, as is the case with Robert Shwartzman.
Test pilot of the Team Ferrari and a member of its academy since 2017, the 22-year-old driver will be able to race this season. While teams are required to run a young driver at least twice during the first free practice session of a race weekend, Robert Shwartzman will have the opportunity to participate. It indeed has an Israeli license.
« Robert was born in Israel, said Mattia Binotto on the sidelines of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. He holds an Israeli passport. In terms of license, it is not a Russian one. He also had an agreement with Russian companies (its sponsors) to put an end to their collaboration. For now, he is still our test driver and he will remain so. If opportunities arise in the future to let it ride, we will probably let it ride.."
Ferrari must now choose in which Grands Prix it will allow its test and reserve drivers to drive at the opening of a race weekend.
