Bahrain and Abu Dhabi will conclude the 2020 season

La Formula 1 announced at the end of confinement a first schedule of eight events for its 2020 championship. But after the Italian Grand Prix, scheduled for Monza on September 6, it’s a big blur!

There are serious rumors of a unprecedented journey on the hilly Mugello track (Italy) the following week, but Ross Brawn, Motor Sports Director of Liberty Media (owner of F1), prefers to temper the enthusiasm. “Things are constantly evolving, but we still have time ahead of us (to decide on the second half of the calendar. Editor’s note).

In an interview with the official sports website, the Briton explains that “many options (him) are proposed. We are very confident about the possibility of having a successful second half of the season, but it would be pointless to make an official announcement today (June 12), because there are still moving areas that need to be stabilized. »

The former team boss was kind enough to reveal the last two rounds for the year 2020. Did you think that the Covid-19 crisis would make it possible to change the bling-bling atmosphere of Abu Dhabi for a more historic track? Missed !

“From what we can see right now, I think Bahrain and Abu Dhabi will be the safety net at the end of the season. This gives us 10 Grands Prix and we will have to find at least five or six races (between Italy and the Middle East). »

The Sakhir track, introduced to the F1 calendar in 2004, could even receive the discipline twice, thanks to a change of layout. “We could go there and run on two different configurations, continues Ross Brawn. There is a sort of quasi oval track which would be quite exciting and all the tracks in Bahrain feature F1 Grade 1. »

In 2010, the championship opened with an extension of the desert circuit by 888 meters, which was not very successful because it was too winding.

Conversely, two destinations are not on the rise. “We admit that places having to build a temporary circuit, ase Baku (Azerbaijan) and Singapore, need more preparation time than permanent enclosures. Every aspect must be weighed. Some races cannot take place, others yes. »
