Two weeks before the Bahrain Grand Prix, tensions remain high in the kingdom where demonstrations are still numerous. Two Bahrainis died recently from tear gas inhalation before another demonstrator was shot dead while filming a protest movement. Voices continue to be raised against the coming of F1, British MP Richard Burden having yesterday again urged the FIA to reverse its position by canceling the race.
“The FIA is constantly monitoring and evaluating the situation in Bahrain”, assured a spokesperson for the Federation to the Reuters agency. “We are in contact every day with the high authorities, the main European embassies and of course the local promoters of the Bahrain International Circuit as well as the international promoters. The FIA is responsible for security at the event and relies on local authorities to ensure security as it does in any country. Bahrain's senior authorities assured us that security matters were under their control. »
