Barrichello: “A lottery”

Rubens Barrichello, pole sitter at Interlagos, is well placed to return to the world championship. The Brazilian knows he deserved his pole position, even if he recognizes that things turned in his favor during the downpours.

Barrichello: “A lottery”

Rubens, here you are on pole, in front of your home crowd, two races from the end of the season?
This is a special moment for me. Qualifying is a big moment when you get through it. Do you have a good balance? and it?s not a problem if the track is dry or wet? you feel great and you can go. It was a very good qualifying and, even if we had less fuel than the others, it?s always better to start from the front than from the middle of the pack. I am very, very happy with this result and also to see that all the people stayed to watch this despite the rain episodes.

How did you manage the qualification with the many interruptions?
In seventeen years of Formula 1, I have never gotten out of my car twice in the middle of qualifying. It?s quite incredible that things are evolving to this extent. You have to be constantly ready. Then you have to go out on track and know how to concentrate, so I'm really proud of the work accomplished. We were at the limit in Q2 and we should have switched to intermediate tires but we were lucky to pass. I knew the car was competitive. But I'm keeping my feet on the ground because we haven't won anything yet. What we did today is fantastic. It's incredible.

Does your pole position allow you to get closer to Jenson Button in the championship standings?
It?s always better to start from pole position. It is the performance that remains in the memories. I did the job I had to do. Be as fast as possible and at the forefront. I wasn't looking at what was happening nearby, I was focused on my task. I will do the same in the race. I'm going to do everything to win and when it's over, I'll go see Jenson and Sebastian's results. But it's an excellent start and I'm looking forward to tomorrow (Sunday).

You are on pole but you can count on disappointing performances from your two rivals for the title, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel, qualified at the back of the grid?
It?s pretty incredible, isn?t it? If you go back, you don't think it could be possible. It's impossible to see Rubens starting from pole and suddenly seeing Jenson and Sebastian starting from the back. You thought it was impossible then the rain came. It?s a lottery and things worked out in my favor.
