Having finished last in sprint qualifying the day before, hoping for points from the race of the same format would have been considered overambitious, especially after his misfortune in FP1 – an accident that led to a red flag. Yet, Oliver Bearman did it. Eighth under the checkered flag, the driver Haas had picked up the final point awarded on Saturday… before receiving a five-second penalty for a dangerous slack in the pit lane, thus ceding his position to Yuki tsunoda. Point or not, the rookie put in a remarkable performance.
Conditions as tricky as the Florida weather this Saturday would be enough to impress a beginner, but Oliver Bearman likes to shine where his mistakes would be excused. Esteban Ocon, his teammate, recently acknowledged: “ Technically, he's above all the rookies I've seen in the past. He's more prepared than I was when I first arrived in F1. More than anyone of our generation, honestly, I think he has a bright future in Formula 1. »
A winning strategy for Bearman
« I'm happy after my disappointment yesterday, said the British driver before his penalty was disclosed. Now we have to focus on qualifying straight away, but I'm happy to bring home a good result for the team and I hope qualifying for the main race goes well. »
Thanks to a winning strategy – the same as Yuki Tsunoda and Lewis Hamilton – by switching to slick tires before the competition, Oliver Bearman then set the pace. In qualifying, postponed to 22:15 p.m., the Briton will try to extend his form to avoid repeating his poor performance from the day before.
