Berger negotiates for Rosberg's future

At Mercedes, Nico Rosberg's contract comes to an end at the end of the 2016 season. The double world vice-champion is a very popular driver, but the star's clan has already indicated, through its non-executive president Niki Lauda, that both parties wanted to continue the adventure.

An observation also made by Gerhard Berger. The former pilot Ferrari et McLaren admitted on the discipline's website, having been contacted by Nico Rosberg and his father Keke, 1982 world champion, to lead negotiations for the German's future contract.

“It’s quite simple: I’ve known Nico since he was little, and I raced against his father Keke for years, Berger explains. Last week the two contacted me to see if I could do them a favor and negotiate a new contract for Nico., as he wants to concentrate fully on the championship. I said, “Of course.”

I think everyone understands the positions: Mercedes wants to keep Nico and Nico wants to stay with Mercedes. But, of course, there must be a firm position in the details, a well-defined framework. To be honest, it would surprise me if we started negotiating with another team. But we never know. It is clear that Mercedes is the first address for us. »

Berger did not evade questions concerning a potential transfer to Ferrari for Rosberg, mentioned by the Italian press. “It is probably true that Nico would be flattered from an emotional point of view, but what is paramount in all negotiations is to be in the best car on the grid, and that is certainly Mercedes.

I also believe that Nico has an affection for Ferrari. But again, right now he is with a team that has won the last four titles and offers the best package. »
