Bottas continues Mercedes' pole streak in Austin

Valtteri Bottas allowed Mercedes to extend its series of poles at the US GP by giving the star-studded team its 6th victory in qualifying in Austin. Lewis Hamilton is on the 3rd row.

Bottas continues Mercedes' pole streak in Austin

Valtteri Bottas won his first pole at the US GP by setting the new lap record in Austin (Texas) with a time of 1’32”029. The Finn allows Mercedes to remain undefeated in qualifying on the American track since 2014 by achieving her 5th pole of the season, the 11th of her career.

The Mercedes driver narrowly won his pole, Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) having failed only 12 thousandths from the reference without managing to improve during his second attempt. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) are on the second row.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) failed in 5th place, almost 3 tenths behind his teammate. The Briton will only need an 8th place in the race to win his 6th title (or 9th with the point for the best lap in the race).

Alexander albon (Red Bull) is in 6th place and will be the first driver on the grid to start on soft tires, the opponents further forward on the grid having opted for mediums. The Thai will set off in front of the McLaren de Carlos Sainz Jr and Lando Norris. Qualified in a single round, Daniel Ricciardo (Renault) took 9rd place ahead Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso).

Nico Hulkenberg (Renault) was the first eliminated from Q2 after failing to be a tenth behind Pierre Gasly. The former winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans preceded Kevin Magnussen (Haas) and Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) who saw his best time canceled. Lance stroll (Racing Point) and Romain Grosjean (Haas) completed the classification of the session.

The Alfa Romeo and Williams failed from Q1. Antonio Giovinazzi failed less than 7 hundredths behind Romain Grosjean (Haas). Kimi Räikkönen preceded George Russell (Williams), Sergio Pérez (Racing Point) and Robert Kubica (Williams). The Mexican will leave the pits after a penalty.
