Brawn comments on the “compromise” found on the 2021 regulations

We were expecting a revolution, it will only be an evolution. On the engine level, the next technical regulation should not completely disrupt the main lines of the V6 tubo / hybrid Power Units seen since 2014 in F1.

A choice by Liberty Media, owner of the discipline, made after long discussions with the current engine manufacturers in the category, namely Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda.

Ross Brawn, Motor Sports director of the American entity, confesses that this decision is not in line with the first ideas put forward, but underlines the achievements of the negotiations. “Existing suppliers do not want others to come forward, admits Brawn on the F1 website.

We found a compromise. There are regulations which mean that new arrivals will receive support from existing builders. There will be components and technology that will need to be shared if requested.

It wasn't as radical a change as we were proposing, but a step in the right direction and there are some interesting changes in the way the driver has to manage the engine, which I think is good for the sport. »

Aero 2019 as a first step

Before 2021, F1 will have to deal with a rework of the technical regulations on the aerodynamic level. The front fins, already seen during different test sessions this year, will be particularly impacted. According to Ross Brawn, these modifications could still evolve before 2021 if the hoped-for performance gain is not yet achieved.

“If we don't get everything we want with these changes, we will learn from them, we will continue with the next phase of changes and we will continue to do it until we get cars that can compete against each other. on track, which is not the case at the moment, Brawn advances.

It's useful to see if the teams have been able to evolve and go in different directions because we don't want to find out that in 2021."
