Brawn: the new regulations will benefit Mercedes even more

Ross Brawn returned to the new regulations put in place this season at the microphone of Sky Sports. According to the new Motor Sports director of Liberty Media, the new owners of the F1, the increase in performance of single-seaters will only strengthen the domination of Mercedes which has monopolized the first places since the implementation of the Power Unit in 2014.

“We expose ourselves when we make such changes. Hopefully it will work, but I think it's a good example of what we shouldn't do. If the goal was to stop Mercedes' winning streak, we would expect it to be exactly the opposite. A team with this much resources will happily take on the challenge. It was naive to believe that this would destabilize Mercedes, it will instead give them an advantage”, warned the former director of Brawn GP.

Ross Brawn is also concerned about the situation of the teams at the back of the grid, with Manor having filed for bankruptcy before the start of the 2017 season due to lack of funding. The redistribution of income is also studied by Liberty Media.

“We need to ensure in the long term that we have more teams able to race. At the back of the grid, a driver's commercial considerations are much more important than at the front. If we help the most modest structures, it would be in the interest of the discipline and we could see more pilots like Verstappen emerge ", he added.

The head of Liberty Media in the discipline also raised the prospect of carrying out a non-Championship race in order to test different solutions, despite the very busy schedule. Ross Brawn must remember the experimentation with a new qualifying format last year which was quickly canceled to return to the current version.

“My dream would be to organize a non-Championship race once a year, that would allow us to experiment. For example, we could test a different format and make the meetings evolve. We cannot afford to take a risk during the season by getting the format of the races wrong. We have to be sure when we apply such changes, we cannot make modifications during the season. »
