Button, wisdom too much?

Jenson Button is the favorite for the world championship title F1 but could be capped on the post for extra caution. This is what Martin Whitmarsh fears, who experienced the same misadventure with Lewis Hamilton in 2007. Indeed, the Briton, wide leader in the championship with two races remaining, notably 17 points ahead of Kimi Raïkkönen, had failed in the fight for the title, the Finn managing to regain it. Martin Whitmarsh, team manager of McLaren, fears that the same mishap will happen to Jenson Button.

« He has a lot of pressure but Jenson shouldn't be too careful, advises Martin Whitmarsh. He doesn't have to do everything possible to win, but if he stays on the defensive, he could lose his rhythm and his instinct. Brawn can't play too much defensively because F1 is very, very competitive. If Button does his job normally with the car he has and the points advantage he has, then he should win the championship and he will do it here. »

To illustrate his point, Martin Whitmarsh recalls the mishap experienced by McLaren in 2007, missing out on the drivers' world title while Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso were aiming for the world crown. “ We took a relatively defensive attitude and the race went badly for us. We made some mistakes in 2007. And last year, we should have guided Lewis (Hamilton) better, who was under a lot of pressure. »
