With 117 points for Lewis Hamilton and 76 units for Jenson Button, the 2008 world champion has a clear advantage in the Championship even if he is 47 points behind the leader Fernando Alonso. McLaren is waiting to see how the situation will develop but could quickly make a decision to maintain its title chances. “We could reach a point (where Jenson Button is forced to help Lewis Hamilton), but with nine races and 25 points available for each of them, things can change quickly.”, commented Martin Whitmarsh, Team Principal of the Woking team. “The good news is that we arrive at Spa with both of our drivers wanting to win the race. »
For his part, Jenson Button does not intend to give up so easily even though half of the season has only been completed. The 2009 world champion takes an example from similar situations within other teams. “I think this conversation is pretty pointless at the moment. Forty points difference (41 units) is not a huge gap, it is less than two victories. Half of the grid is in front of their teammates and the latter do not say that they will help them. We always believe we have our chances and as long as they exist we fight to keep them. We are here to fight, it would be a pretty boring Championship if only 12 drivers had to fight for victory while the rest of the field was helping them. »
