Campos: “The road is long”

Adrian, it has been two months since the FIA confirmed your participation in the World Championship. F1 in 2010. What stage are you at with your team?

We had already done a lot of work before our entry was validated, but of course we have to be careful and make sure everything is done on time. At the moment we are happy with the way things are going. But surely there is still a long way to go to have a car on the track? at the beginning of January.

Have you already chosen a base for your team?

For the moment we are based in Valencia but we are considering other possibilities. The Community of Murcia made us a great proposal but for the moment we stay where we are and we will make a definitive decision in about a year.

You have won titles in other disciplines but Formula 1 is another world. What made you decide to try such an adventure?

We have won every championship we have participated in so far and Formula 1 is the next step. It is also a historic step forward: for the first time, a Spanish Formula 1 team will exist, so it is also a story of the heart. By looking back to our victorious past, we hope to reiterate the type of result we are accustomed to. At least that?s what I?d like to see.

What role did cost reduction in F1 play in your commitment?

We were lucky enough to get a place in F1 thanks to the new budget cap rules and we built the team around that. We know that all teams will return to a budget of 55 million euros within two years, so we will have an equal basis. In fact, it?s easier for us who start from nothing while the others all have to cut back on their spending.

Do you already have partners?

We are currently in a phase where we are going to get in touch with sponsors by presenting them with our business plan. But don't forget that we only received the green light from the FIA on July 22 and at the moment everyone is on vacation. Moreover, with the stories that there have been in Formula 1, it was not serious to approach potential sponsors without knowing the overall package. Our canvassing will really begin at the beginning of September.

Dallara will design your car. Are you convinced of their ability to deliver something competitive? They have released good cars in many championships but have been absent from F1 for many years.

I am sure they will do a very good job. They?re the biggest company that builds single-seaters, so I have a lot of confidence in them. Besides, I only went to headquarters last week.

Can you tell us what will happen within Campos Meta in the coming months?

Well, we're going to talk to sponsors, we're going to define a marketing plan and then we're going to name our drivers? and, of course, we will prepare our cars.

Dallara is based in Italy and your headquarters is in Spain: how will you cope with the distance?

It is very simple. Dallara is only designing the car, the rest will be done in Spain. Dallara works with suppliers who will send the parts to Spain and we will assemble them here. Later, when we build our new factory, we will have everything under one roof. The factory will be called Campos/Dallara and this will also be the name given to the car.

Now that BMW has announced its withdrawal from Formula 1, might you be interested in what's left of the team?

No, everything is clear to us. Their decision to withdraw came too late for us. If he had announced it a month earlier, it would have been perfect.
