Carey: 'Two teams can't win it all'

Almost a year later the announcement of the takeover of Formula 1 by Liberty Media, Chase Carey, president of Formula One Group (FOG) said he was “absolutely satisfied” with the progress of the current season, with a team (Ferrari) finally able to put the title holders in difficulty (Mercedes).

Chase Carey also sees Lewis Hamilton “the best possible ambassador for this sport”, according to statements made to the newspaper Bild am Sonntag. “It represents the F1 in the best possible way », referring to his personality and his talent on the track. However, he points out a lack of competition for the podiums; according to him, the fight is limited to two teams (Ferrari and Mercedes), a number which will have to increase in the future. “That’s the most important thing to change. Two teams can't win everything! »

Another worrying issue in the paddock, the next regulations concerning engines for 2021. The teams want a less expensive engine block, a desire perfectly understood by Chase Carey. “Motors must be cheaper, less complicated to produce and noisier. And we will also have to see more action on the track. »

The Formula 1 boss does not hide his desire to add “a test on the Asian continent” replacing Malaysia, which hosted its last Grand Prix this year. “There will also be an additional event in the United States, either in Miami, Las Vegas or New York”, he revealed.

Finally, Chase Carey wants to reassure motorsport fans. “We do not want to reinvent F1, but to produce a sport geared towards fans rather than teams. As such, I imagine race weekends combining F1 and F2, but also the Formula 3. Young drivers could benefit from better attention and develop more quickly. »
