“Women face a physical problem in F2 and F1 which we do not find in Formula E ». After his recent test of the car 100% electric, Carmen Jorda provided her point of view, particularly on the accessibility of the discipline compared to other categories.
A little sentence which had not gone unnoticed and had triggered a wave of reactions in the world of motorsport. Already criticized for her appointment to the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission, the Spaniard wanted to respond to her detractors in a press release.
“Last Saturday, after testing the Formula E single-seater before the Mexico City ePrix, I spoke about this experience with several journalists. During an interview, I was asked to compare driving a Formula E and an F1, and then, specifically, if it was easier for a woman to race in Formula E than in F1.
With a little experience in both single-seaters, I gave my personal point of view that driving a Formula E represented a less significant physical challenge than an F1, because of the reduced aerodynamic downforce.
I also mentioned that there was a physical barrier for women in F1, which has created a major debate in recent days, including several important women in the industry. I would like to thank the drivers for sharing their opinion, and I respect their point of view.
I am sorry if my comments came across as inclusive of all women and caused confusion, as I was giving my opinion on my own experience.
I never wanted to discourage other women from competing at the top of motorsport, or that they couldn't physically do it. My comments were simply a response to a direct question: "Do you think Formula E is easier for women?" ".
As a member of the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission, I am committed to encouraging more and more women to get involved in the sport, on and off the track, and congratulating those who achieve great results .
So, I would like to renew my congratulations to Tatiana Calderon, announced as test pilot Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team. I hope she can become the first woman to start a Grand Prix in 41 years, and I wish her the best for the season to come.
I wish all women a happy International Women’s Day tomorrow (today). »
It now remains to be seen what the reactions will be to this press release from Carmen Jorda.
