What Miami needs to improve for its next Grand Prix

The new layout of the Miami Grand Prix did not appeal to all the drivers in the paddock. Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz had in particular in their sights at the press conference the chicane at the end of sector 2, not suited to their cars according to them.

After the long-awaited first Grand Prix in Miami, it is already time to take stock in Florida. The Miami International Autodrome circuit offered numerous overtakes in the middle of the pack. The long straights made it easier for the drivers to maneuver. But not all the turns were to the taste of the protagonists of the Formula 1, in particular the end of sector 2. The three drivers who finished on the podium on Sunday had the opportunity to express themselves on this part of the Florida track.

« I think it's a chicanery that this generation of cars which are heavy, which are wide, when you pass close to these two corner edges, it almost seems like you need a little luck to get around it and you sometimes go on a weird angle and the car bounces a lot, then sometimes you take it right and gain a tenth or two », Analysis Carlos Sainz.

The pilot of the Team Ferrari is not the only one to think that the end of sector 2 of the Miami Grand Prix is not suitable for the car. " Yes, I think if I had been in a kart it would be a nice chicane to take, but not in an F1 car like the one we have at the moment "Adds Max Verstappen. The Batavian revealed that this series of turns had roughed him up during Free Practice. “ I remember in the four laps I did on Friday, I almost knocked myself out because I hit the first curb and your head bounced from left to right, at least five or six times and that. was really bad. »

For the next Grand Prix in Miami, the two drivers already have proposals to modify turns 14 to 16. “ Perhaps we should already modify the arrangement of the borders, so that the ramp is a little more gradual and more pleasant to cross, suggests the Red Bull driver. But yeah, it's so slow and I think our cars are much better if it's a smoother combination. » The other improvement requested by the drivers is the addition of TecPro, particularly after the two accidents of Carlos Sainz and Esteban Ocon Friday on this same chicane.

Charles Leclerc, who declared that he appreciated this chicane, thinks that there are still modifications to be made. “ I agree that for racing action I think we can do something better because tracking wasn't easy on that part, also for visibility it's quite difficult once you get a car in front because you have to be so precise on the curbs. » With this short stopover in the United States, the paddock is now heading to Barcelona, before crossing the Atlantic once again for the Canadian Grand Prix on June 19.
