This time, Leclerc did not work miracles

Charles Leclerc was still setting out to go beyond the limits of Ferrari in Barcelona on Sunday. Starting ninth, the driver was fighting very close to the podium. Until his electronics failed him mid-race at the last chicane of the circuit.

“Suddenly, my screen and engine went out, and the rear wheels locked up. We are not yet sure what happened and we are investigating the cause of the incident. The car started again, but it was already too late because I had undone my harness and had to return to the pits,” says the Ferrari driver.

The mishap therefore cost him a good result. “I think we had a good chance of finishing around sixth place or even higher. We were very competitive on soft tires and fast on mediums, which we couldn't really show because of the traffic. The plan was to make just one stop and it was going pretty well. »

Sebastian Vettel on the other hand came out better. The German takes seventh place. “We tried something different and it paid off. I was struggling in the first stint even on mediums but during the second I felt much better, despite having the soft tires for a long time. »

Vettel is happy with the result. “There is still a lot to do but at the moment this is our real pace, that's why sometimes we have to take some risks to have different options in order to finish ahead of our opponents. »

In the end, the weekend remained poor for Ferrari, which lost third place in the constructors' championship. “It’s very disappointing, not only because of the result but also the way.”  analysis Mattia Binotto, the team principal. “In qualifying we did not maximize the potential at our disposal and we know that grid position is essential on this circuit where overtaking is so difficult. With a better qualification, we had the ability to finish much higher.”

Ferrari still has work to do to get back into the same lap as the Mercedes.
