Leclerc disappointed by a race where Ferrari had everything to win

Deprived of victory in Monaco, Charles Leclerc did not hide his frustration at the end of the Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver lost all hope of putting his name on the list of winners for his meeting due to poor team strategy.

Pole position is definitely not synonymous with victory in Monaco and Charles Leclerc can once again attest to this. After setting the best times in free practice 1 and 2 and in qualifying, the Monegasque's weekend turned into a nightmare with a pit stop strategy which cost him his first success on home soil. The rain had created a wind of uncertainty before the start of the race and with this new parameter, the Team got lost in her choices. Sergio Pérez didn't ask for more to take victory.

« Disgusted, he blurted out disillusioned at the microphone of Canal +. I did everything right from the start of the race. This choice (put on intermediate rain tires. Editor’s note) I was asked 4 laps before and I said we could go straight to the slicks but maybe it wasn't the time and (maybe it was necessary) wait a little bit. In short, it’s like this »

In the quest for the title and with a championship where every point counts, Ferrari lost big this Sunday. “ On the other hand, it shouldn't happen too often in a year because today we had everything to win and we completely threw it in the trash, regrets the Monegasque. So it hurts, once again at home. The season is long, we have the performance to recover, but hey we can't afford to do races like that. »

Two errors in quick succession in the pits

It was on the 19th lap that Charles Leclerc lost all hope of victory in Monaco when he swapped to wet tires via the intermediates. “ For me, situations like this have become very complicated. Afterwards it was the team who made the decision and I'm sure they did it at the time thinking it was the best thing for me, but it clearly wasn't so here it is... I don't really know what to say, honestly, it's difficult to accept, but that's how it is and today I couldn't do anything more. So I hope we learn from this mistake and next time we make the right decision. »

While Charles Leclerc's race had already taken a bad turn, on the 22nd lap, the Scuderia made another bad strategic choice by having its two drivers go through the pit lane at the same time. A decision that Charles Leclerc is far from having appreciated and he made it clear to his engineer with the radio. “ I got angry especially because first I was told to stop then I was in the pits and I was told to stay out so everything was super messy so we have to be as good here as 'elsewhere and today we clearly weren't so it's not okay. » Small consolation for Charles Leclerc, for the first time in history, he finished his national Grand Prix. Not sure that this will be enough to boost the morale of the Ferrari driver.
