Chase Carey anticipates more postponements: 'We're aiming for between 15 and 18 dates'

While COVID-19 continues to worry the planet, leaders F1 are trying as best they can to adjust a 2020 calendar whose first 7 events have already been canceled or postponed.

Criticized for their questionable management of the situation in Melbourne, F1 and the FIA have been much more proactive since returning from Australia. Chase Carey, CEO of the Formula One Group, made a new assessment this Monday, in the wake of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix postponed which was to open the season on June 7.

« For a week, F1, the FIA, and the 10 teams have come together to take rapid and clear measures to respond to the COVID-19 crisis., declares the American with the famous mustache. No one can predict the course of the pandemic at this time. We therefore do not know when we will be able to resume competition but we are determined to organize a Formula 1 championship in 2020.

We are aware that there may be further postponements of scheduled events, but we intend to see the campaign begin at some point during the summer. We will then follow a calendar of 15-18 dates.

We have already brought forward the summer break to spring in order to be able to ride this summer. We also expect to see the 2020 season exceed its original end date of November 29. The sequence of events will be greatly different from that originally planned. However, it is impossible to give a precise program at present. ».

Carey further specifies that these exceptional circumstances offer greater latitude for F1 to try new things and explore new horizons, in the vein of the Netflix series Pilots of their destiny.

The CEO of the F1 Group finally welcomes the rapid growth of Esport, marked by the organization of several online events in recent weeks, including one affiliated with F1 and its official partners.

As a reminder, the FOM, the FIA, and the teams have already recorded the postponement of the 2021 technical revolution to 2022, while At least 8 races are necessary for F1 champion titles to be awarded in 2020.
