It’s a subject that somewhat animated the Hungarian paddock on Friday… the new rear wing ofAston Martin. On the latter, upper elements in the form of angles were placed at the level of the side fins of the wing, creating possible vortices and therefore potentially dirty air in the wake, exactly what the FIA wanted to annihilate in establishing its new 2022 technical regulations to allow competitors to follow and overtake each other.

Present at press conference F1 Saturday morning, Mike Krack was very comfortable with his find. “When you develop a fin, you don’t wait until you introduce it to decide, explained the main team of Aston Martin. We were in contact with the FIA throughout the development in order to understand what would be accepted or not, and we were told nothing about what we planned to bring. So we said to ourselves: ok, let's go. There is nothing special about this fin. This is simply an interpretation of the regulations. And I'm not worried about a possible rule change. Whatever happens about this, we will comply with it.”

No claims against Aston Martin

Christian Horner, always inclined to delight us with his tongue-in-cheek humor, did not fail to comment on this introduction, addressing a barely veiled attack on his neighbor Mike Krack. “If it is in accordance with the regulations, that is the main thing. I find that interesting. And if it turns out to be quick, maybe this time we'll be the ones to copy them! » The laughter from the audience was immediate...

“What is certain is that the other nine teams are testing this in CFD as we speak, quipped Alan Permane, the sporting director ofAlpine. And if it turns out to be faster, I have no doubt that you will see this on many cars in the future, should it be declared definitively legal of course. Of course, there is always this question of the spirit and the letter of the rule, but we must not forget that the only thing that interests us is to go quickly and to be reliable. It is up to the FIA and the F1 to establish whether this is really against the spirit of the rule. But I wouldn't be surprised to see these fins on several cars in the short future.

The FIA technical teams, who were aware of Aston Martin's intentions, did not point out any possible compliance problem since they did not refer Aston Martin to the stewards. It remains to be seen whether one or more teams will decide to lodge a protest against the wing of the Silverstone team. At the time of writing, this has not yet been the case.
