Surprisingly second on the starting grid for the Canadian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso failed to confirm this performance in the race with only a seventh position at the finish, behind his teammate Esteban Ocon and in front of the Alfa Romeo de Valtteri Bottas et Guanyu-Zhou. The Spaniard nevertheless received a five-second penalty after the checkered flag, pushing him back to ninth place, behind the two Italian single-seaters. The pilot of theAlpine for having hampered Bottas by changing lines too often between turns 10 and 12 of the penultimate lap, as indicated in the official document provided by the FIA. Valtteri Bottas therefore finished seventh and Guanyu Zhou eighth, his best result in F1.
