Who says qualifying on a wet track, says Fernando Alonso ! The Spaniard managed to place his Alpine in the Top 5 in Singapore. In difficult conditions, like Canada earlier in the season, the double world champion once again produced a good performance in qualifying. He will start from the 3rd row as “best of the rest”.

At the end of the session, Fernando Alonso was delighted with the result, although he believes it could have been even higher. “Yes, I thought [I could do better]. There was one time we crossed the line first! I said to myself, 'If there's a red flag or something, I could keep my position.', confided the Spanish pilot. I am very happy, I think a Top 5 would not have been possible on a dry track, but it was possible with a wet track, so we optimized the performance in these mixed conditions. This gives us a good starting position for tomorrow (Sunday). »

Alonso: “ We are only two positions away from a podium”

For his 350th Grand Prix this weekend – which will constitute a new record – Fernando Alonso dares to hope for better than 5th place, depending on the weather conditions. “Let's see what happens tomorrow: if the race is dry, it will already be very good to secure the points to help the team. If it rains, anything can happen. We are only two positions away from a podium, why not dream? »

On a circuit where it will be difficult to overtake, the native of Oviedo will have to count on one of those excellent starts of which only he has the secret, as well as a little bad luck for his direct opponents. His main rival, Lando Norris, will start alongside him in the 3rd line. « Alpine et McLaren find themselves together once again on the grid. I will try to control Lando [Norris] on my side, and I hope that Esteban [Or with] will be able to do the same with Ricciardo. We will continue to push until Abu Dhabi. I think we can do it. »
