Recruited in 2014, the French manager had to manage on a daily basis the deterioration of links between McLaren and its partner Honda under the orders of the returning Ron Dennis. A crisis which was one of the markers of F1 in the 2010s.

While you were team director Renault, then Lotus from 2010 to January 2014, what are the circumstances of your arrival at McLaren ?

I was approached on December 31, 2013 by Martin Whitmarsh who said he wanted to meet me as soon as possible. We are making an appointment for January 2 at 9 a.m. at Heathrow Airport (England. Editor’s note). There, he told me that he was going to concentrate on the McLaren Group, that he was going to leave his role as team principal and that he wanted me to join the team.
