It's an open secret, the Formula 1 seeks to integrate an American pilot into its ranks. Uncle Sam's country has taken an important part in the queen discipline in recent years with the arrival of Liberty Media, the stable Haas or from Dorilton Capital at Williams. For the moment, no one has managed to win one of the twenty seats even if names stand out including that of Colton Herta, the current driver ofIndyCar.

The American no longer hides his ambitions and finding a seat in Formula 1 remains one of his next objectives. “ It's a serious ambition for me, explains Colton Herta in the F1 Nation podcast. There are quite a few things, when I finish running, I want to be able to say that I did them. And Formula 1 is high on the list of those things, isn't it? I wanted to go to IndyCar. I wanted to race the Indy 500 and I still want to win the Indy 500 obviously, which I haven't done yet. »

Teammate of Lando Norris at Carlin

It was in 2015 that the native of Valencia, California crossed the Atlantic and made his debut in car in the British Formula 4 championship. At Carlin, Colton Herta rubs shoulders with a young British driver… a certain Lando Norris. " I think in my first year I did 30 races and 25 test days, which is crazy. There were no more than four days during the season that I wasn't in the car. I always saw Lando as a good teammate and he did great things. It's cool to look back and say I was able to kick his butt on weekends. »

The youngest winner of an IndyCar race in history in 2019, Colton Herta has six victories and seven pole positions to his name. Third in the championship in 2020, the American has already become one of the sure values of North American single-seater racing, at just 21 years old. These good performances allowed him to land the role of test driver at McLaren and the time is approaching for the first laps of the track.

« I could probably (reveal the date of the test) but I don't know, I might have problems, so I won't do it. You know I want to be in F1 at some point in my career, and obviously time is of the essence for that, so it's going to be very important to do a good job in testing and hopefully open a few doors. I hope that if it doesn't go anywhere with McLaren it will get people talking a little bit. Maybe it will open a door if I can get in the car fast enough. » Before perhaps seeing Colton Herta arrive in Formula 1, it is another American who will drive for the first time in Formula 1 since the departure of Alexander Rossi, Mario Andretti during the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
