With his incredible comeback from 17th place and his sublime victory in Brazil, Max Verstappen gave a terrible blow to his main rival in the championship, Lando Norris, in the title race. The Briton had a golden opportunity to get closer to his Dutch rival by starting from pole, but several mistakes and bad timing with the red flag deprived him of a potential success at Interlagos.

Race results: Max Verstappen (393 points) has regained a 62-point lead over Lando Norris (331 points) in the Drivers' standings and will have his first match point in Las Vegas this weekend. He will only need to have a 60-point lead over the Briton (the equivalent of two Grand Prix wins, one Sprint win and two fastest laps) at the finish of the American round to be crowned champion for the fourth time in Formula 1 !

Long story short: if Max Verstappen finishes ahead of Lando Norris at the finish of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, he will be crowned world champion. On the other hand, if the Briton finishes ahead of the Dutchman, he will have to score at least three more points than his rival to delay the deadline until Qatar, at least.

Verstappen champion in Las Vegas if…

  • He wins the Grand Prix
  • He finished 2nd and Norris didn't win.
  • He finished 3rd (with fastest lap) and Norris did not win
  • He finished 3rd (without a best lap) and Norris did not finish at least 2nd
  • He finished 4th (with fastest lap) and Norris did not finish at least 2nd
  • He finished 4rd (without a best lap) and Norris did not finish at least 3nd
  • He does not concede more than 2 points to Norris, regardless of his ranking.

The simplest scenario is missing: doing a 'Senna/Prost in Japan' at the start of the first corner!

Exactly what I'm thinking... putting in the cause of too cold tires! In qualifying, the flying lap was done after 2 warm-up laps, will the tires be warm enough at the 1st braking of the Grand Prix?

Always been convinced that Max Verstappen would be world champion for the 4th consecutive time after an excellent start to the season followed by the "slump" until Monza. Let's hope that the suspense will be maintained until Abu Dhabi for the beauty of the show especially if there is no trickery and other low blows from the Dutchman!
