How does Hamilton's debut at Ferrari compare to his previous seasons?

No wins, no podium finishes and seventh place in the Drivers' Championship after four Grands Prix: Lewis Hamilton is experiencing one of his worst starts to a Formula 1 season... statistically speaking.

Without a doubt, Lewis Hamilton certainly dreamed of a better debut with Ferrari. After four rounds, the Briton has a strange record. No Grand Prix wins, no podium finishes, only 25 points scored and a seventh place in the Drivers' Championship. And yet: the seven-time world champion has already won a race, winning the Sprint in China from pole position. A paradoxical but above all disappointing start to the season, like the Team Ferrari, which has still not won a single Grand Prix trophy in 2025.

Obviously, during Lewis Hamilton's long and illustrious career, we weren't used to seeing the English driver so far behind in the championship after the first four rounds of the season. But in concrete terms, how does the Briton's debut at Ferrari compare to his previous seasons? So we opened the history books and collected statistics from the last eighteen seasons to compare them with the Scuderia's new driver's start to the 2025 campaign. Alas, the figures for the current year are far from good...

Indeed, after the first four rounds, Lewis Hamilton is currently experiencing his second worst start to a season in his career in Formula 1. With 25 points, he only did better than in… 2024, where he only scored 10 points in the first four matches of his last campaign at Mercedes. And again: in 2025, the first Sprint took place in the second Grand Prix of the season. Without his success in the Sprint race in Shanghai, Lewis Hamilton would have only 17 points.

Hamilton, already goodbye to the title?

Of course, his disqualification at the end of the Chinese Grand Prix would leave the Briton with 33 points to his name, which would be a better tally than in 2009 (26 points, reported to the current scale) and in 2022 (28 points). However, let's not forget that in 2009, the Stevenage native was also disqualified from the opening Grand Prix in Australia after finishing 4th on the track... More generally, Lewis Hamilton has never won a world title by scoring fewer than 50 points in the first four rounds of the season.

As for wins and podiums – which will be zero in 2025 – this is only the third time in his career that Lewis Hamilton has not finished on the box at least once in the first four Grands Prix. This scenario has only happened twice before, in 2009 and last year, in 2024. In those two seasons, the Englishman finished 5th and 7th respectively in the Drivers' standings at the end of the championship. Given the history, there is therefore little to cheer about for the rest of Lewis Hamilton's season. Unless Ferrari manages to right the ship and the Briton can tame the SF-25. If he fails, we will have to quickly set our sights on 2026…

Too much hair... Joking aside, I think Uncle Bernie was right. We won't see him honor his contract to the end. Bye bye...

As soon as a GP has been run on a circuit of each type, we'll know what to expect. For the top teams, the choice will be made quickly: no point wasting resources developing a car for a regulation that's in its final year, better to invest in 2026. At that point, the hierarchy will freeze. That's why running 24 races is ridiculous, because from that point on, 15 or 16 would be enough. Fortunately, McLaren has two drivers capable of fighting for the title, at least everything won't be decided in advance. And Verstappen can lie in wait for quite a while, ready to take advantage of a slip-up from the McLaren boys. But for the rest, teams like Mercedes and Ferrari (but also Aston-Martin) have probably already written off the current season.

The 2025 season is very long, but when F1 arrives at Imola, we will have a much clearer idea of what will happen next in the season... and it is very likely that most of the field will already have their minds set on 2026! He can't do it with the SF25, but Leclerc is doing painfully better!

For me……. it's a big disappointment, for the moment, a champion of this level must quickly be up to speed. Between qualifying and the race he is dominated by Charles ……. Already at Mercedes, Russell dominated him….!! It's perhaps time to think about something else ….. …….. 😎👀🤨👀🤨

In recent years, he has shown that he only regains his motivation if the car allows him to win. Which is understandable when you have such a track record. Fighting to finish 5th doesn't interest him. The ball is therefore in Ferrari's court, but he could get tired of it before the team provides him with a car capable of winning.
