The Ferrari driver, hit by a part lost by Rubens Barrichello's car, was taken to hospital after violently leaving the track in Hungary.

Concussion for Massa

Qualifying session of the Hungarian Grand Prix, last minute of Q2. Felipe Massa, then on the track, shoots straight into turn 4 and violently hits a wall of tires. Medical teams rush to the scene to extract the pilot Ferrari of his car. After several minutes, he was transferred by ambulance to the Hungaroring medical center.

Reviewing the images from the Brazilian's on-board camera, it turns out that a stray coin hit his helmet at full speed. The driver seems stunned at the time, he no longer turns his steering wheel and hits a wall of tires. Afterwards, Rubens Barrichello expressed his concern, thinking that it was a part of his car which could have caused this accident. At the end of Q2, the Brawn GP driver admitted to having felt the loss of a part on his car. A rear suspension spring reportedly broke and ended up on the track, subsequently hitting Felipe Massa.

While the session is temporarily stopped, Felipe Massa is transferred to the nearest hospital. The images of the Brazilian as he exited the ambulance show a conscious pilot, making several gestures. His engineer confides that he was able to exchange a few words with the pilot, the latter complaining of being in pain. An FIA representative declared a few minutes later that Felipe Massa was in stable condition, without specifying the exact nature of the Brazilian's injuries.

After examinations, it turned out that the Brazilian was suffering from a cut on his forehead, damage to his skull bones and a concussion. Felipe Massa will remain under observation in intensive care until further notice.
