Covid-19: motorhomes removed from GPs

While F1 is preparing to restart with the Austrian GP contested on July 5 at the Red Bull Ring, the organizers of the championship have adopted numerous protocols to limit the risks of spreading Covid-19.

The paddocks of the European Grands Prix will thus have to evolve. The imposing motorhomes installed by the stables will exceptionally be replaced by tents and awnings. This measure will make it easier for teams to respect the limited number of personnel, as the construction and dismantling of these temporary buildings requires a lot of manpower. The redeveloped paddocks will also allow trucks to be installed further back from the garages.

The teams will only be able to have 60 people per team compared to 80 in normal times, but the organization should not be too affected according to Laurent Mekies, the sporting director of Ferrari.

“We mainly had to reduce the number of non-technical people. Pit and engineering operations will not be affected too much, explained the French engineer. The FIA allowed us to have the same number of curfew hours as last year even though we had to lose one between Friday and Saturday in 2020.”
