If the Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, the MotoGP is the pinnacle of competition on two wheels. As such, there is no shortage of comparisons between the two disciplines. CARhebdo asked Carmelo Ezpeleta, General Manager of Dorna (holder of the commercial rights to MotoGP), his opinion on the two sports.
The main difference according to the Spaniard lies in the distribution of income among the teams. “Our commercial arrangements benefit Dorna, but also the teams. Our system is different from what is practiced in F1 in the sense that we give more money to private teams than to official teams », he explains. In F1, it is the Manufacturers' ranking of the past season which determines the amount of this sum.

In MotoGP, Yamaha, Ducati, Honda and KTM receive a financial boost. « These latter teams are entitled to financial aid if they decide to provide a motorcycle to private teams. (for example, official Ducati with the Ducati Pramac satellite team). We have found solutions to allow private teams to compete and defend their opportunity”, underlines Carmelo Ezpeleta.
In addition, where F1 has focused on promoting V6 Turbo hybrid engine technology since 2014 with staggering costs, MotoGP has had the well-being of motorcyclists as a priority. “We assume that we are first and foremost a sport, and we believe that the most important element is the human element.
MotoGP is the best motorcycling show in the world because it brings together the best riders. Our goal is to provide them with a framework that guarantees the best opportunities for them to express their talent. If MotoGP is attractive, it is also for this reason. »
