Daimler brushes aside rumors surrounding Mercedes and Toto Wolff

For several months, the future of the factory team Mercedes and its main team Toto wolff en Formula 1 beyond the 2020 season animates the column against the backdrop of the alliance with Lawrence Stroll, close friend of the Austrian, boss of Racing Point, and new strong man ofAston Martin.

Aston Martin which will return to F1 next year with a factory structure replacing Racing Point. Aston Martin where Wolff took shares worth 42 million euros and 0,95% of the capital. Aston Martin finally which has just named Tobias Moers, formerly of the Mercedes AMG sports branch, as general manager. Hence perhaps the rumors that have appeared in recent days in the press across the Rhine.

Several German-speaking media have indeed reported that Wolff, who holds 30% of the shares in the Mercedes team, was going to leave his role as principal Mercedes team, while Daimler was preparing to step back in favor of Stroll. Rumors from the corridors which did not fail to annoy the German manufacturer, who once again responded.

« Rumors surrounding our potential withdrawal from Formula 1 continue to be unfounded and irresponsible, we were told in an official statement.

Sport has just taken the right measures to deal with the consequences of the Covid-19 crisis and ensure its sustainability and financial viability. We salute them.

Our intention is clear: to continue competing in Formula 1 as a Mercedes-Benz works team in the years to come, together with our main partner Toto Wolff ».

The Austrian has often linked his future at Mercedes to that of the six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who is also coming to the end of his contract at the end of the current campaign. However, the distribution of its different roles – team principal, CEO, and shareholder – could be readjusted.
