Mercedes AMG F1 quickly reacted after its disappointing 2012 season by reorganizing its structure. The Brackley team has welcomed Niki Lauda as non-executive director, Toto wolff came to take over from Norbert Haug as the new sporting director of the Stuttgart manufacturer, while Lewis Hamilton replaced Michael Schumacher for this new season. However, Daimler is aware that the German team will not be able to instantly translate these changes onto the track and is banking more on the 2014 season when the new 6l turbo hybrid V1.6 engines will make their debut.
“It was obvious that we had a good engine in recent years, perhaps the best, as well as good drivers, but we were not competitive because of the chassis”, recognized Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche in the Salzburger Nachrichten. “Improvements will obviously not be immediately visible after the appointment of new people to the team. We should not expect miracles this year. With next year's new engine, we will have a better chance of reaching the place we are currently aiming for. »
