In the Yas Marina paddock (Abu Dhabi), the fate of Daniel Ricciardo initially seemed to be confirmed when Helmut Marko indicated that the Australian was returning to Red Bull Racing as “third driver” in 2023. But a few hours later, Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner was less enthusiastic.

“We haven't signed anything yet, but Helmut, in his enthusiasm, obviously announced it, declared the British boss. So, I guess that means Daniel will join us, unless he refuses our offer. »

Oops, so Dr Marko would have gone faster than the music! Daniel Ricciardo's options are extremely rare since the entire starting grid is determined for next season. The man with eight victories in F1 has no other choice but to settle for a shadowy position as third driver, test driver or reserve in a top team. Waiting to return as a starter in 2024.

“Daniel is quite a character,” has followed Christian horner, who directed it between 2014 and 2018. “It’s disappointing to see his recent performances, he would have liked to do much better this year (12th with a single fifth place as best result). But Daniel remains one of the big names in Formula 1. He of course has a great history as a Red Bull Junior representative. »

However, if Daniel Ricciardo were to return to Red Bull, it would mainly be to do the work of a highly paid sandwich man. “With the demands that are being made on tenured pilots these days, just from a marketing standpoint, we are very active, we do a lot of demonstrations and events. So having a driver of Daniel's profile with the team, within the group, would only be an asset for us. » “Danny Ric” Would he be able to accept such a job, he who only dreams of competing in Grands Prix?
