Daniel Ricciardo surpasses Vettel in Melbourne

Daniel Ricciardo woke up the Melbourne public by taking the first row on the grid of the Australian Grand Prix for his first race with Red Bull Racing. It front of Mercedes who chose to stay on rain tires, the Australian relied on intermediate tires and had the luxury of slotting between the two W05s by beating Nico Rosberg's Silver Arrow by a few thousandths while finishing at three tenths of the pole won by Lewis Hamilton.

“It was exciting. The weather has come to spice things up”, commented Daniel Ricciardo who signed his best result in qualifying. “The whole session went well: Q1 started well and then the rain arrived. It was the first time we drove at such limits in the wet. My engineer constantly told me my position, telling me that I was fighting for pole. It’s really good to be in this position for my first race with the team. »

Daniel Ricciardo has a brilliant start to the weekend at home as he gains the upper hand over his teammate Sebastian Vettel, reigning four-time world champion, who experienced his worst qualifying since the 2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by missing Q3. “ I saw that Seb was two seconds away. The team will have to investigate what went wrong on their side.”, adds the Australian. “I am in any case happy to have arrived so high on the grid and I am satisfied for the team which has secured a first row on the grid. We didn't think about that a few weeks ago. »

The Australian Grand Prix will be contested from 7 a.m. French time and can be followed live on AUTOhebdo.fr. Photos from the weekend can be found on this link.
