Discover the final starting grid for the Austrian GP

At the time of revising the mathematics lessons for 3rd year middle school students one last time, the Formula 1 showed a bad example on Saturday June 29 following qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. Indeed, a micmac has taken place due to several penalties, which profoundly modifies the starting grid.

First of all, four drivers received penalties before qualifying : Nico Hulkenberg (Renault, engine change, + 5 places) and Kevin Magnussen (Haas, gearbox change, + 5 places). But also Alexander albon (Toro Rosso) and Carlos Sainz Jr (McLaren), some to start from the last row after multiple mechanical changes.

Then you add three relegation places for George Russell (Williams), found guilty of obstructing Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) in Q1. Problem, the Englishman had achieved the 19th time out of 20 drivers. If we add the penalties of the Albon-Sainz Jr duo, here is the 2018 champion of Formula 2 wins a place on the grid (18th)!

Let's come to the case Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes). The five-time world champion received a three-place penalty for hindering Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo) in Q1. Initially credited with the second time, the Englishman should logically start fifth (2 + 3 Places = 5th).

More don't forget that devil Kevin Magnussen, fifth time of Q3! The Dane was relegated to 10th, so fifth place was vacant to accommodate Lewis Hamilton.

However, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has put in place two special rules. First, penalties are applied in chronological order (Hamilton's penalty comes after Magnussen's for example). This explains why George Russell will start ahead of the Albon-Sainz Jr duo.

Secondly, when a penalty is applied, a place necessarily becomes available on the grid. In the top 10, Lewis Hamilton's second place and Kevin Magnussen's fifth place become empty slots.

At this time, Lewis Hamilton actually fell to fifth place (2nd + 3 places = 5th as a reminder). However, given the second place vacated by this same Lewis Hamilton on the grid, everyone moves up a rank. So Lewis Hamilton goes fourth. Not very correct math-wise, but it's F1.

Starting grid for the 2019 Austrian GP:

1. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – 2. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)

3. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) – 4. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)

5. Lando Norris (McLaren) – 6. Kimi Räikkönen (Sauber)
