Departure of Rémi Taffin, the big summer cleaning at Alpine F1

Decided by Laurent Rossi, the restructuring of the Enstone facilities (Alpine) and Viry-Châtillon (Renault) is experiencing a major boost with, as a first consequence, the departure of Rémi Taffin, until then Engine Technical Director.

It took Laurent half a season Red, arriving at the head ofAlpine Cars last January, to form your opinion on the team F1 of the firm and decide on the measures to take to ensure its progression in the hierarchy. Direct consequence or not of a first part of the season below expectations despite the Hungarian victory, the man decided to review the organization chart of the two entities constituting Alpine F1 Team with the first consequence of the departure of Rémi Taffin, one of the pillars of the organization. The French engineer who managed the development of the Renault powertrain since 2016 as engine technical director, joined the Renault group in 1999, working successively with British American Racing, Arrows, Benetton Formula and Renault F1 Team. In 2005 and 2006, he supported Fernando Alonso in winning his two world titles before, from 2012, taking charge of track operations at Renault Sport F1. In 2014, he was appointed director of operations to supervise the teams on the test benches and the assembly department of Viruses-Châtillon. By parting ways with his star engineer, Laurent Rossi – with the support of Luca de Meo – sends a strong signal that the time for change has come and that new impetus must be given to the project; which is entirely legitimate – and perhaps even essential? – but which is not without danger. Many new people have appeared within the management ofAlpine over the last few months and whose experience of F1 is still limited…

For Rémi Taffin, I think I would not have reacted the same way if it hadn't been for this major event that was little Esteban's sensational victory in Hungary. Because for me, this victory made it possible to atone for all the little inconveniences that made Alpine Renault was not a manufacturer that I followed: First of all, that I loved at the time when he was screwing Schumi who for me is the biggest crook in the history of F1, he was nothing less than... equal to himself on the Budapest track, whereas until then, Renault's decision to (re)trust him after a couple of years was, for me, marketing low grade... Well then the car was not bad, because even if we continue to think that success was needed to win that day, the mechanics kept all its best promises... And finally, the p 'tit Esteban, apart from a stupid name (joking, eh) I didn't really know what to think of it... I found him irregular, to say the least, and especially between him and Gasly I didn't have a preference at the beginning but since Monza… in short, you understand, he amazed me in Hungary because he made absolutely no mistake! Coming back to Taffin, I think that he is simply paying for being the last of the band of elders, and that it is natural - I say this without knowing him particularly - that the spring is now failing... he will bounce back I am sure !

The results are not below expectations, they are more or less the expected results (read Marcin Budkwoski's recent interview with Mark Hughes) because of the age of the chassis and the engine. On the other hand, it is possible that the results of the 2022 engine project will fall short of expectations, hence Taffin's departure.
