More powerful engines in 2016?

The Strategic Group of F1 meeting last Thursday in Geneva (Switzerland) asked the engine manufacturers, Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda, consider the entry into force of a revised Power Unit in 2016. If Bernie Ecclestone really wants take over the old engines, several avenues will be studied at the next meeting scheduled for January 6.

Among the reflections reported by Car engine and sport, an increase in power up to 1000hp, the improvement of noise, the abandonment of the limit of gasoline consumption per hour (100kg) and lower costs on Power Units with common elements such as drums would be at the top of the specifications in order to improve the quality of the show and revive public interest.

The regulations will remain substantially the same for 2015, but the freeze on the development of 6l turbo/hybrid V1.6s could be eased for the benefit of Renault and Ferrari who are loudly demanding a thaw in order to reduce the gap on Mercedes. Any changes would normally have to be submitted for approval to the FIA before February 28 and only concern areas related to reliability, cost reduction or consumption. The developments could now be installed throughout the season.
