Ways to attract young audiences to F1

Work on the image of the drivers, like the NASCAR, where the pilots are celebrities in the United States and around the world, making the F1 more visible, especially on the Internet... Here are some of the ideas that emerged from this Friday's press conference where many team managers were present, such as Monisha Kaltenborn for Sauber, or Cyril Abiteboul for Caterham, this with the aim of broadening the F1 audience, particularly towards young audiences.

“I think we need to find the right balance between accessibility, exclusivity and value. I think there's a belief right now that more exclusivity creates more value. Maybe that was true, maybe it's less true with new media. » explains Cyril Abiteboul. For Federico Gastaldi, Deputy Team Principal of Lotus F1 Team, “ we have to be careful about what we say to young people. But I think if we can use the right tools like Youtube. It's a sport, we just have to have the right method to make ourselves known to young people, and be an example for them. »

“Young people like to interact in many different ways. And we have just as many assets at our disposal as a sport. Not only in terms of video images, but in terms of data and information/feedback, so I think if we find the right formula, there is a huge opportunity to expand our audience especially among young people, and this, exponentially. » says Graeme Lowdon, Marussia Sporting Director.

F1 is currently facing criticism regarding the noise of the new 2014 Power Units. Some players in the industry, as explained by the promoter of the Australian Grand Prix Ron Walker, fear a desertion from the circuits and a drop in audiences.
