Brief yellow flag caused by Leclerc cost Verstappen pole

In the running for a 3rd pole position this season, Max Verstappen was hampered by the yellow flag caused by Charles Leclerc at the end of Q3. The Dutchman still said he was satisfied with his 2nd place at the finish.

Firste pole position of his career, Max Verstappen had it within reach. The fastest man in Q1 and Q2, the reigning world champion was heading straight for the best time, thus dislodging Carlos Sainz from the highest position on the timesheet. This was without counting on a small error with major consequences. Charles Leclerc.

So launched in his last attempt, the Monegasque was surprised at the exit of the Maggots-Becketts-Chapel sequence. Starting a spin, Charles Leclerc caused a short yellow flag forcing Max Verstappen, a hundred meters behind him, to briefly ease up. Result ? Lost time but above all a 3e pole position in 2022 soared by 72 thousandths to the detriment of Carlos Sainz, a first in 150 Grands Prix.

« It was a very tricky session partly because of the rain, advanced the Dutchman, visibly not disappointed at having lost pole position. It rained and then the track dried. You had to be on the track at the right time.

Above all, the car ran great. Q3 is sometimes a lottery when it comes to putting out the best lap possible. I was a little hampered on my last lap by a yellow flag unfortunately. However, it is a very good thing to be on the front line. We have a good car, both dry and wet."

Interspersed between Ferrari of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen intends to play a bad trick on the Reds while taking precautions. “ It's not just about the first corner but the race as a wholeHe says. You have to set up the best car possible for the race, manage the tires well."

This Sunday at 16:00 p.m. (French time), Max Verstappen will have to pull out his claws to try to get a 7e victory this season and continue its path at the top of the championship.
