You don't change a team that is winning, or at least one that is functioning well. This seems to be the philosophy of McLaren, which announced ahead of the 2019 British Grand Prix that its two current starters – Carlos Sainz et Lando Norris – will still team up in 2020.
A choice hardly surprising given that the Spaniard had arrived from Renault with a multi-year contract in his pocket. The British rookie, for his part, is the first member of Woking's young driver sector to have given satisfaction in some time. Lewis Hamilton.
After a long journey through the desert, marked in particular by three nightmarish seasons with Honda, McLaren is raising the bar this year and occupies 4th place in the Manufacturers' Championship with 52 points, or 20 more than the factory team of its engine manufacturer Renault.
Sainz and Norris are no strangers to these great performances, the two men finishing 7th and 8th in the Drivers' standings respectively. Not to spoil anything, these two get along like thieves and contribute to the great atmosphere which once again surrounds the team with eight Manufacturers' titles and 12 Drivers' crowns.
« By renewing our two pilots, we can continue to progress based on stable and solid foundations., commented Andreas Seidl, McLaren team principal. Carlos and Lando's results allowed us to move forward. Their technical feedback is proving valuable in guiding the development of the MCL34 and working on the future MCL35. Carlos' experience proves very useful, while Lando quickly adapted to the rigors of the F1 ».
« The contribution of Carlos and Lando is undeniable, both in the factory and on the track, added Zak Brown, McLaren Racing Executive Director. These are two racers who embody the McLaren brand and spirit extremely well ».
The renewal of Sainz and Norris in any case closes a possible door of return for the young retiree Fernando Alonso, who still holds a role as a McLaren ambassador officially.
Carlos and Lando announce our 2020 driver line-up in the most Carlos and Lando way possible.
