Ecclestone: hard to open up to the American market

Bernie Ecclestone has commented on speculation about a possible takeover of F1 by Liberty Media, an American company headed by John Malone. The businessman who has already invested in Formula e could represent an opportunity for the premier single-seater discipline to finally open up to the American market while the US GP in Austin (Texas) is struggling to secure a future.

“To open up to the American market, you would have to have ten events in America, sell tickets at low prices and have lots of hamburger stands. It would then no longer be F1. But if all the recovery scenarios materialize, they will be able to do what they want! », commented the director of the FOM on the official F1 website.

Bernie Ecclestone's situation could change if the sale of CVC Capital Partners to Liberty Media is confirmed. The F1 financier gave no opinion on the subject, although he acknowledged that Toto wolff, Director of Mercedes Motorsport, would be a good replacement. “He’s practically a car salesman. These are the kind of qualities you need! », joked the director of the FOM.
